New Opportunity for Recent High School Graduates Starting August 1

Beginning August 1, students entering a California community college shortly after high school can now streamline their path to the California State University (CSU) system through a new dual admission program. Called the Transfer Success Pathway, this new opportunity is designed specifically for high school students who graduated or earned their GED in 2023. Recent graduates who encountered academic or financial hardships that prevented them from immediately attending a CSU, those who did not get into their university of choice, or individuals who took at gap year in 2022 are eligible to enroll.

Students who enroll in the Transfer Success Pathway can leverage the academic and financial benefits of community college with assurance that they have a seat waiting for them at one of the CSU campuses. To participate, students enter into an agreement with their preferred CSU campus that guarantees future admission based on meeting academic requirements and availability in their chosen degree program. All universities in the CSU system are participating in this dual admission program, although some majors may be exempt.

Students may only enter into one agreement at a time. Should they opt to change their chosen university or program, they will need to cancel their first agreement and complete a new one before the enrollment deadline of September 30, 2023.

As part of the Transfer Success Pathway, students must complete either an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) or an established course of transfer at a community college within three years.

In addition to guaranteed transfer, students will receive access to CSU libraries and financial aid information. A CSU representative will also follow-up with the students directly to ensure they are on the right track.

In summer 2023, a CSU Transfer Planner portal will launch to help serve as a digital roadmap for students to track their transfer admission requirements. The planner also lets students research CSU campuses and programs and enter into the Transfer Success Pathway agreement with one university for their chosen major.

Enrollment for the Transfer Success Pathway is available to recent high school graduates from August 1 through September 30, 2023. Visit calstate.edu/TransferSuccess for additional information. High school counselors can sign-up for direct CSU communications on this program at counselors.calstate.edu.

Please help us share this important information with all graduating seniors and encourage them to explore this opportunity.

Celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is celebrated every May to pay tribute to the generations of AAPIs who have enriched America’s history. This is particularly important in California since it is home to more than six million AAPIs and includes a wide range of ethnicities, cultures, and languages.

To kick off AAPI Heritage Month, the California Community Colleges’ ICanGoToCollege.com campaign launched a new Korean-language version of the website to provide more students and families with a one-stop shop for important information in-language, including career education, financial aid, guaranteed transfer, and more. The website also offers information on dual enrollment courses for high school students so they can take high-quality college courses that count toward a high school diploma as well as a future college degree.

Understanding that California’s diverse AAPI community is not a monolith, the Chancellor’s Office develops culturally responsive information and resources like the new Korean website to engage students and their families while providing equitable access to higher education to help ensure students from all backgrounds succeed in reaching their goals. ICanGoToCollege.com offers information for AAPI students, such as AAPI scholarships, and the website is also available in English, Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese.

Please share the ICanGoToCollege.com website with students and families today.

Dual Enrollment: Save Money, Save Time

High school students can save time and money toward a college degree by taking community college classes with dual enrollment!

Dual enrollment offers students a chance to take college-level coursework that counts as credit toward both their high school diploma and college degree. Even better, dual enrollment courses are free for many students and most career education courses are offered.

If your local high school does not offer dual enrollment classes on campus, please know that many students are eligible for tuition-free dual enrollment courses at their local community college.

All community colleges offer some form of dual enrollment, and more than 112,000 high school students graduating in the 2019–20 school year participated—an increase of 56 percent from 2015–16, according to a Lumina Foundation report. The same report found that dual enrollment students enroll in two- and four-year colleges at higher rates after they graduate from high school.

It’s Not Too Late to Apply for Financial Aid

Money shouldn’t stand in the way of a student’s educational goals, and we want students planning to enroll in college in fall 2023 to know it is not too late to apply for financial aid. The Cal Grant application deadline for students attending a California community college in the 2023-24 academic year is now September 2, 2023.

The Cal Grant is a type of financial aid that you don’t have to pay back and can help cover the cost of books, food and sometimes even the rent. In addition to Cal Grants, California community college students have access to a wide range of financial aid options to help pay for their education, including federal grants, scholarships, work study, and other types of local financial aid.

Students must act now! While the Cal Grant deadline is September 2, deadlines may vary for other types of aid. It is important that students submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or, for undocumented students, the California Dream Act Application (CADAA), right away to be eligible for the most aid possible and avoid missing deadlines.

For those who are planning to attend college in fall 2024, the 2024-25 FAFSA and CADAA forms will be available online beginning October 1, 2023. Students should apply as soon as possible once the forms are available.

Help your graduating seniors get the most financial aid possible and encourage them to complete a FAFSA or CADAA by September 2. To get one-on-one help completing their application, free online or in-person financial aid workshops are available to students and can be found by searching the Colleges page on ICanGoToCollege.com.

Introducing California Community Colleges Chancellor Dr. Sonya Christian

On June 1, the California Community Colleges system will welcome Dr. Sonya Christian as its new chancellor.

After an extensive, seven-month nationwide search, the California Community Colleges Board of Governors unanimously selected Kern Community College District Chancellor Dr. Christian as the next permanent chancellor to lead the largest and most diverse system of public higher education in the nation.

Christian is a historic choice, becoming the first woman and the first person of South Asian heritage to be appointed as permanent chancellor.

For more than 30 years, Christian has actively engaged in policies and practices related to state and national completion, quality and equity agendas. Most recently, Christian was named the sixth chancellor of the Kern Community College District in July 2021 where she implemented a call to action with a focus on advancing student success and closing achievement and equity gaps.
